June 6, 2011 - Underwater Video - Side & Front Views

Click here for instructions on how to use the video player. Use the Turn Comments On or Off buttons for voice-over comments. Note that you can play the clips one frame at a time or in slow motion using the player control buttons. Play the clips with and without comments, and then see the Drill Clips and Stills pages (above) for suggestions on how to deal with the issues mentioned.

See the Recommendations below the video player. These are very minor issues. You are swimming really well.

Priority
Recommendation
1
Arms. On entry your left palm faces forward a bit. This is a braking action, and it will take longer to get your catch, because you will have to press your hand and forearm down on the water for a (relatively) long time. See the Arm Stroke Setup page, and note where the swimmer's hand position as she reaches full extension.
2

Breathing. You look forward slightly just before breathing. You then get your head back into a neutral position on your spine for the actual breath, so I suspect this is a habit you have developed for navigational purposes. In the first clip on the Natalie Coughlin page, she talks about the importance of keeping your head down and navigating by the pool markings.
