Technique

Rating Scale: 1=beginner, 2=needs attention, 3=fair, 4=strong, 5=excellent
Skill Rating Observations and Video Clips
Posture 3 posture3 10-04-19. Pretty good except head held a little too high. Notice the head position on the Natalie Coughlin clips.
Breathing 3 breathing3 10-04-19. Good breathing in terms of the timing, but you are lifting your head high instead of rotating just your face to the air.
Rotation 2 rotation2 10-04-19. You are getting good rotation onto your right side, but only minimal rotation onto your left side.
Arms 2 Extension: arms2 10-04-19. Your hand is in a very good position when you reach full extension.
Front Quadrant Timing: See clip above - not enough glide, your are pulling your hand and elbow back too early. Leave your hand extended to find quiet water (there should be no bubbles on your hand when you begin your catch.
Catch: See clip above - too late and deep. After your glide, pop your elbow toward the surface and while strill driving the elbow forward, get your hand and forearm under the elbow.
Pull: See clip above - Because the catch is so late, the pull is too deep and short. Your pull will become much more effective when it begins in the front quadrant.
Recovery: See clip above - You enter the water and get to full extension nicely.
Kick 3 2-Beat: not evaluated
6-Beat: kicking3 10-04-19. Timing is good but kick is too hard and with too much knee-bend.

Recommendations

Priority
Recommendation
1
Arms. Work on delaying your catch and getting your hand and forearm vertical under you elbow, before pulling back on that elbow. This will give you a much longer and powerful pull.
2
Kicking. Try to recover your heel toward the surface using a straight leg, whcih means using your glutes instead of your hammies to "wind up" for the next kick. This will allow you to kick with a long lever instead of a short one.
3
Rotation. Work on getting rotated to both sides. This problem area may go away when the above two issues are corrected.
