See the Recommendations below the video player.

Priority
Recommendation
1

Arms and Timing. You get your arms very deep in the water, and you begin your catch and pull too early. See the Mastery - Setup page. Then see the Mastery - Catch & Pull page, note how early in the stroke cycle the swimmer gets her hand and forearm vertical in the water. Practice any of the catch and pull drills on the Video Clips - Arms page.

2
Kicking. You are bending your knees too much. This leaves your thighs deep in the water (creating extra drag) and means you are kicking with a short lever (from the knees down instead of the whole leg). Practice your kicking technique out of the pool - lie on your belly, and practice lifting your whole leg using your glutes (instead of just your shins using your hamstrings) - see Dry Kicking for Freestyle and Backstroke. For general information about kicking, see the great kicking article on the Swim Smooth Website: Leg kick in the freestyle stroke.
