2: Oxidative Stress and Free Radical Damage

Exercise causes a huge increase in muscle oxygen consumption, damaging
healthy cells through the formation of free radicals. In this session
we will examine how this affects athletic performance and overall
health, and role of nutrition in minimizing the damage. Dr. David
Phillips is a frequent speaker on nutrition, exercise, and disease
prevention.

3: Triathlon Training Emergencies
|
|
Triathlon Emergencies will cover common medical emergencies related
to each leg of the triathlon. Topics may include (preliminary):
- Open Water: Drowning, hypothermia, physical contact injuries
- Cycling: Putting together an emergency action plan; proper
neck and spine immobilization; protecting the airway; splinting
broken bones; managing acute bleeding
- Running:Hyperthermia, dehydration, hypo vs. hypernatremia,
management of sudden cardiac death

David B. Phillips, MD

Dr. David B. Phillips graduated from Harvard University
in 1984 where he earned academic honors and swam as an All-American.
- Completed his MD at Wright State University School of Medicine
in 1989 where he was elected to the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha
Medical Honor Society
- Completed his residency in Emergency Medicine at Methodist Hospital
in Indianapolis where he was Chief Resident
- Practiced 11 years as a Board Certified Emergency Physician
As a nationally ranked triathlete, Dr Phillips has achieved the
following athletic accomplishments:
- 2004 USAT National Long Course Masters Champion
- 2005 St. Croix Half Ironman Masters Champion
- 2005 Ford Ironman World Championships finisher
- 2004, 2007 USAT All- American
- 2004, 2007 Ranked #1 Age Group USAT Southeast Region
- 2008 member Team USA representing the United States
at the ITU World Championships in Vancouver, BC
